What’s hot in new ways of working for 2023

It’s been a tumultuous couple of years for new ways of working. COVID has accelerated existing trends towards more flexibility at work, digital transformation, and increased business integration.

Virtual and hybrid working, matrix management, and digital and agile working are all being introduced at the same time in some organisations.

So far most focus has been on introducing these changes, as we move into 2023 the focus is shifting to how to be embed them into our capabilities and ways of working.

COVID has also moved the more human aspects of leadership to the fore, with an increased emphasis on finding purpose and wellbeing at work.

A tough economy and high inflation mean organisations need to navigate this, whilst at the same time being careful around costs and sometimes reducing headcount. We will certainly need to prioritise.

From conversations with clients and our own thinking, there are four key themes in new ways of working that we think will be hot in 2023

  1. Where are we with remote and hybrid working? Many of our clients have policies in place but haven’t successfully got people back into the office en masse, or adapted their learning and HR processes for a virtual and hybrid future. What happens next?
  2. Many organisations have implemented a matrix structure to support global working and becoming more integrated, but how do they navigate this complexity and at the same time ensure agility and flexibility in this more connected environment? Does it have to mean more meetings and slower decisions?.
  3. There is a lot of interest in helping people find their purpose and meaning, and to express it at work to increase performance, engagement and wellbeing.
  4. We need to update our leadership criteria, curriculum and expectations for a post COVID world

We have 2 new books and new training content coming out in the New Year on the subjects of making the matrix agile and finding purpose at work.

If you have plans in these areas for 2023 or would like to find out more please let us know. We are already seeing a busy start to the year so it’s going to be fun.
