Meetings: Cut out unnecessary participants – visibility
We are currently running a “Better Meetings Campaign”, designed to help people cut out unnecessary meetings, conference calls and webinars and radically improve the quality of those that remain. (There is no cost to join and an opportunity to share experience and win prizes. )
One of the themes of the campaign is getting rid of unnecessary participants.
In our Better Meetings Survey, we found that most people think that 25% of participants or more were unnecessary to the content of their meetings.
Just for fun, here is one you may recognise – Visi Bil. Bill comes to meetings to work on his personal visibility, even though he has little to add to the content or conduct of the meeting.
He can easily derail conversations to bring around to things that are of interest to him or to give you self-serving updates on his latest project.
Visibility is important in large organizations and people do need a mechanism for staying visible to those who are important to their career or the performance of their job. However, hijacking other people’s meetings to do this is not the right process.
