Looking good on video in online meetings

The use of online meetings is growing fast, and video is an important element of standing out in this world.

People like to see faces, and research shows that video really helps in building trust and rapport and in maintaining collaboration with your customers and colleagues.

However, some people are reluctant to use video because they don’t think it shows them at their best. Or you may have seen poor use of video where people have undermined your confidence in them by the way they appeared or behaved.

Despite these concerns, anyone who relied on face to face contact for selling, delivering services or collaborating with colleagues is now realizing that video is a big part of their presence and personal brand. They realize that their ability to get things done through video will be a key enabler or limiting factor in their performance for the foreseeable future.

We have focused for several years on the skills of facilitating and designing really participative online meetings. Now we’ve added to this a short video-based programme based on some simple principles for standing out on video.

The program gives a process and guidelines on analysing your own performance on video and then introduces some practical tips and exercises in three key areas

  • How you look – the camera angle, your background, lighting and how you appear on screen
  • How you sound – your verbal behaviour, tone and energy
  • How you behave – your eye contact, facial expressions, posture, body language and gestures

Many of the principles are pretty straight forward but surprisingly difficult to apply in practise.

The 4 videos only take around 15 minutes to watch in total and there are several exercises that you can complete offline that can really make a difference to your video presence.
