Virtual Teams

Creating participation in virtual meetings

"maybe the problem is not the technology"An increasing proportion of meetings and are being delivered through tools such as video conference, web meeting (such as WebEx or Lync) or conference call. The use of these technologies can bring a discipline to the conduct of meetings. If nothing else, they tend to be shorter and we need to work harder to pay attention to what people are saying.

But creating participation in virtual meetings is an additional challenge. It’s not really surprising: many of our face-to-face meetings lack participation and engagement too.

If your face-to-face meetings are full of boring PowerPoint presentations with no opportunity to engage or discuss, then translating these to webinar or video conference will just allow you to bore a larger audience at lower cost.

Creating participation and engagement when meeting through technology is a particular skill. Even if you have mastered the technology itself (and few people have been trained in the technologies they use regularly) you still have to plan for participation.

As part of our 20th birthday celebration we are offering some of the tools we developed for reducing the number and increasing the quality of both face-to-face and virtual meetings in a free campaign: Better Meetings Campaign .

When you join the campaign you will receive six weekly booklets showing you how to avoid unnecessary meetings, topics and participants and improve the conduct of the meetings that remain. Part of this is increasing the rate of participation and engagement in your meetings.
