The Dutch or German business traveller will not appreciate the Thai steward smiling at them after spilling coffee on their new outfit. A Thai, Indonesian or Malaysian passenger would understand that the particular smile is part of the elaborate apology process stemming from a holistic view of customer-server relationships.
