Matrix organization structure

I have been browsing various articles on matrix organization structure to see what good matrix management resources there are out there – to be honest most of them have a limited view of the matrix – in many cases they confuse cross-functional project management (temporary projects that cross organizational boundaries) with a formal matrix organization structure.

If you have an established structure I am sure you will have learned already that the matrix organization structure in itself solves nothing – it is merely a framework within which we find the right balance of priorities on a daily basis.

Our experience is that all of the value of a matrix comes from the ability of people within it to function effectively and make the right decisions. Unfortunately when we focus too much on structure and reorganization (which is unfortunately the norm) we can easily forget this.
