One of the potential disadvantages of a matrix organization is an increase in the number of meetings. As people experience more than one boss and are members of multiple virtual teams the number of meetings can proliferate.
A key matrix management challenge lies in how to be more connected but at the same time effective. In addition to this, more and more meetings in matrix organizations are conducted virtually rather than face-to-face.
We have worked for 20 years with large organizations trying to simplify and speed up cooperation and meetings are a significant time stealer. In many organizations, professional and managerial people spend two days per week in meetings and tell us that 50% of the content is irrelevant.
