Implementing matrix management – the four waves of change
Strategy should lead to structure, then, systems and skills. These are the four ‘S’s of managing any organizational change. A matrix organization implementation will only be successful if each of the 4S’s is taken through to successful conclusion.
Each of the four waves is a change management project in its own right. If we fail to complete these changes fully then we soon find that the actual results of a matrix implementation start to fall behind our expectations.
This can lead to disillusionment with the matrix and in extreme cases the abandonment of the matrix structure. It is rarely the fault of the structure when this happens, more usually it is a gap in skills.
