John Bland Director, Europe
John Bland joined Global Integration in June 2000.
He has a degree in Chemistry and a Doctorate in Biochemistry from Oxford University. Whilst there, he was a member of Oxford University’s winning boat race crew on three occasions, won a World Championship silver medal, and participated in the 1984 Olympic Games.
He is a keen cello player and plays with the Sheffield Chamber Orchestra.
His claims to fame include being the only one of the Global Integration team to have appeared in the UK’s satirical Punch magazine; and he expresses wry amusement at having been attributed with the invention of the granulette – a way of delivering chemical compounds directly into washing machines.
John’s personal ethos is to have a go at everything, usually mastering it in the process: “Follow your passion.”
International Management Experience
John’s business career included roles in product development and brand support for the European, Japanese, North African, and Middle Eastern regions. In addition whilst fulfilling these roles, he experienced, first hand, the challenges of a global matrix structure. His background was chemistry research and his early career included developing new detergents.
His move to training reflected his desire to share his own experiences of having lived abroad in places as culturally diverse as Belgium and Japan. Before joining Global Integration that interest has manifested itself in his own business, run in conjunction with the University of Sheffield, specializing in improving European – Asian business relations.Since joining Global Integration he has travelled extensively throughout the world facilitating training for several of the world’s largest and best-known companies including Airbus, Vodafone, The Bank of Tokyo Mitsubishi UFJ, TE Connectivity, Johnson Controls, Leica, and the BBC.
His work includes running training programmes on topics such as “Remote and Virtual Teams”, “Tools for Cross Cultural Success”, and “Skills for Matrix Working” amongst others. He works regularly with intact teams designing tailor-made interventions. These are often based on results of the Remote Team Diagnostic Tool, a tool whose development into its current responsive format he helped to oversee. In addition, John enjoys helping organizations to better understand and then refine or design their matrix. Finally, John is committed to virtual delivery and is an expert in delivering interactive training through screen sharing tools such as WebEx or Lync.
Participants very much appreciated his energy, and how he managed to bring concepts to life by drawing on his wide experience of working globally. It has been a pleasure to work with him, and I would recommend him to any organization that is looking to develop its people to thrive in a global / matrixed environment.
I have experienced many different styles of training and coaching and I can tell you John has been a clear highlight.
